Storytelling to engage kids

Innovative toddler essentials

We set out to create a toddler range that captured Hape’s identity, heritage and innovation in equal measure.

Strong as the category was, this line needed to stand apart: distinctive, authentic, and a must-have for early development, with a design language rooted in the past but looking firmly ahead.

Starting with Hape’s beloved Puppy Pull Along, we built a playful world around it, using storytelling to enrich engagement and nurture core toddler skills, following Hape motto: love play, learn.

Puppy Pull Along…

becomes Pepe!

What made it innovative? Like a real dog, it sat, wagged its tail and, as the very first puppy, it was irresistible. We gave it a name, a personality, and friends, creating Sunny Valley and a story. From this, Pepe & Friends was born, delighting toddlers with surprises while inspiring imaginative play and warm connections.

How the Sunny Valley story began

Alongside the collection and characters, we created a leaflet that introduces families to Pepe’s world, using illustrative style that reflects the product and child-friendly language to make discovery playful and engaging.

From story to the collection

Bright, cheerful colours draw children in, using a familiar, educational palette that aids learning through play. Simple characters and landscapes invite toddlers to connect, while a clean, lively graphic style keeps the visuals clear, engaging, and just the right amount of fun.

Reinventing classic fun

Through playtests with children, teachers, and parents, we shaped our 1–3 range around developmental needs, blending sound, movement, varied materials, and storytelling.

Innovative mechanisms and lightweight cardboard spark playful reactions, adding delightful twists to classic toys.
